Order by Home Secretary modifying amount of cubic space for persons
employed in bakehouses, dated 30th December, 1903.
The Order is made in pursuant of Section 3 (2) of the Factory and
Workshop Act, 1901, and came into force on the 1st January, 1904.
The modifications are:—
(1) As regards underground bakehouses, by the substitution of
"500 cubic feet of space to every person" for "250 cubic
feet of space to every person" and
(2) As regards bakehouses (other than such as are underground)
where work is carried on at night by artificial light other
than electric light, by the substitution of, in respect of the
period between nine in the evening and six in the succeeding
morning, "400 cubic feet of space to every person" for
"250 cubic feet of space to every person."
This Order came in force on the 1st January, 1904, and a copy
thereof was sent by the Council to each baker in the City. I have
gone through the list of bakehouses and compared the amounts of
cubic space with the number of persons employed and find that it will
affect one or two bakehouses, but only to the extent of one person each
employed occasionally.
