St. Anne's Ward.—This ward formed part of the district of the Strand Board of Works, but from its situation and character it is more allied to the St. James' district, and together with it forms the Westminster Union.

It does not appear from the above figures that the death-rate from
tubercular disease is declining; the population is decreasing, but the
number of deaths maintain the same level. This is peculiar, as the
number of deaths from all causes and the rate have declined during the
same period (see Table III, p. 11). Seven deaths occurred in connection
with a common lodging-house (54 beds), and 5 of these were in 1901,
2 in 1902. This house is situated in No. 3 area, which had an average
rate of 361 for the last 3 years; on adjustment this is reduced to 223.
The adjoining area, No. 2, consists almost entirely of Newport Buildings,
which have an average rate of 281. Area No. 6 has an average rate of
320; it includes Bateman's Buildings with 5 deaths, parts of Dean
Street, Greek Street, Frith Street, and Soho Square; the rate would
be reduced to 263 by deducting 3 deaths in an institution.
Ten deaths were in connection with the tailoring trades, 10 waiters,
cooks, charwomen, shoemakers and porters 5 each, public-house
employees, packers, labourers and carmen 3 each.
St. Anne's Ward has now the advantage of a bequest left by
Mrs. Eliza Roberts, and known as the St. Henry Fund (of which the
Medical Officer of Health is an ex-officio trustee), whereby persons living
or employed in this ward may be sent away to convalescent homes,
and in the case of consumption it has been possible to extend the stay
in many instances over several months at open-air sanatoria with much
benefit.
