Of the 13 genuine samples of Milk, 3 were purchased
with the view of prosecutions at shops where adulterated
samples had previously been obtained; and 1 of those
certified as of doubtful quality was purchased under similar
circumstances. In this case the vendor was cautioned by
order of the Committee of Works.
Of the 9 samples of Milk certified as adulterated, 6 were
purchased for information, 1 was the sample previously
mentioned as brought by a private purchaser, and on the
other 2 convictions were obtained as follows:—
James Higgs, 9, Shepherd Street, Mayfair, for selling
Milk containing 26 per cent. of added water. Fined 40s.
and 2s. costs; this being his second conviction.
Charles Arthur Bott, 57, Mount Street, fined 20s. and
2s. costs.
The samples of Milk classed as "of doubtful quality"
were poor or partly skimmed.
The 2 adulterated samples of Butter were brought by
private purchasers, as stated above.
The samples of Tea classed as "adulterated" contained
a few foreign leaves and lie tea, and in one instance exhausted
leaves.
All the samples of Coffee contained chicory, and most of
them were labelled to that effect.
The adulterated samples of Mustard contained wheat
flour and turmeric.
The adulterated samples of Pepper contained rice flour,
and, in some instances, turmeric.
Some of the samples of Sugar were dirty, containing
fragments of cane, dust, &c.
The samples of Spirits and of Vinegar examined were
all genuine.
