Wood Pavement.
The conditions upon which the contract for the paving works
was based are, shortly, as follows:—The Contractors agreed
to maintain the roadways for the term of three years after
completion, free of all expense to the Vestry, and to maintain
them for a further term of twelve years in consideration
of an annual payment of 10d. a yard super, in respect of Dean
Street, 6d. a yard super, in respect of Uxbridge Road, 7d. a
yard super, in respect of Bennett Street and Lower Grosvenor
Place, and 8d. a yard super, in respect of South Molton Street,
part of Brook Street, and South Audley Street, the Vestry
agreeing to pay £80 per cent, of the total first cost on completion
of the works, £10 per cent, three months after, and
the balance of £10 per cent, at the expiration of three
years from the date of completion, provided always that the
pavement be in good and satisfactory condition. The Contractors
also entered into a bond, giving the names of two
responsible sureties for the due fulfilment of the contract.
The whole of the work comprised in the several contracts
was completed within the specified time, and in a thoroughly
satisfactory manner.
Piccadilly.
Portions of the pavement of Piccadilly, laid down by the
Improved Wood Pavement Company, in 1876, were taken up
and re-laid during the spring—viz., from Whitehorse Street
to Berkeley Street, and from Park Lane to Hamilton Place,
and from Apsley House to Hyde Park Corner, comprising
together a total area of about 8,608 square yards. This
pavement was originally constructed on a foundation of inch
boards, laid longitudinally and transversely. The boards
have been entirely removed, and a foundation of six inches
