From the figures in the above Table I have calculated the mean duration of lifein the Parish, and in each of the Sub-Districts during the year 1879, and find them to be as follows:—

Mean Duration of Life.
Hanover Square Sub-District .52.49 years.
Mayfair „61.15 „
Belgravia „45.56 „
Whole Parish „48.55 „

These numbers are higher than last year for the whole
Parish and for the Sub-Districts of Mayfair and Belgravia,
but lower for that of Hanover Square.
(The mean duration of life for the Belgravia SubDistrict
during 1878 was given in last year's Report as
40.87 years; this was a mistake, it should have been
44.76 years.)

The mean duration of life in this Parish, during the last five years, has been as follows:—

In 1875 it was 46.67 years.
„ 1876 „ 47.96 „
„ 1877 „ 49.52 „
„ 1878 „ 48.03 „
„ 1879 „ 48.55 „

So that in 1879 it was higher than in any of these
years except 1877, when it was exceptionally high on
account of the very low death-rate.
The mean duration of life in London during the 53
weeks of 1879 was 34.23, or almost exactly the same as it
was in 1878, when it was 34.24.
I cannot, of course, in these calculations make any
allowance for movements of the population.
