A glance at Table III. shows us at once the reason why
the corrected total of deaths and the death.rate are rather
higher than in 1878; it is that the number of deaths of
persons of 60 years of age and upwards, 625, and the percentage
of such deaths to the total deaths, 3037, are
unprecedentedly high, much higher even than last year,
when they were considerably higher than in either of the
five preceding years.
In London generally the percentage of such deaths to
the total deaths was only 22.61; this, however, was more
than 2 per cent. higher than in 1878, although it was nearly
8 per cent lower than in our Parish. The fact that more
than three.tenths of the total number of deaths were those
of persons of 60 years and upwards is remarkable, and
shows how large a number of people in this Parish attain a
great age.
The percentage of Violent Deaths, although less than in
previous years, was, as usual, greater than in London gene.
nerally, and is due to the fact that not only does the Thames
*
form one of the boundaries of the Parish, but that it also
includes a large part of the Serpentine.
The number of Inquest cases, 120 in the 53 weeks, was
3 less than in the 52 weeks of 1878, and the percentage of
these cases to the total deaths was less than in that year, or
than in any year since 1874, and was also less than in
London generally.
