The average number of horses working per day during
the year was 27, exclusive of Sundays.
Sewers.
Serious accidents to the workmen employed in cleansing
the sewers having resulted from the accumulation of foul
gas therein, the Committee of Works instructed me to
report upon the matter, with a view of suggesting some
remedial means to prevent such accidents in future. In my
Report to the Committee, of the 13th November, 1878, I
suggested the use of "Davy lamps," instead of the ordinary
open lamps; the Committee having approved of the suggestion,
these lamps are now used by all men employed in
sewer work throughout the Parish.
It affords me very great pleasure to be in a position to
state that notwithstanding the fact that several works have
been carried out during the year which were not estimated
for, the annual expenditure has not exceeded the estimate.
