place in the Metropolitan Asylum Hospitals, viz., 204 of
unvaccinated, and 134 of vaccinated people; or unvaccinated
60 per cent., and vaccinated 40 per cent. of the deaths; so
that 20 per cent. more of the deaths from small-pox in
hospitals came from the unvaccinated population, than came
from the vaccinated population, which is about nine times as
numerous."
As the deaths from each of the other infectious diseases
were fewer than last year, and except in the case of fever
(including typhus, enteric or typhoid, and simple continued
fevers) fewer than the average, there is little to be said about
them; I must remark however, that only 2 out of the 22
deaths from scarlet fever, and only 1 out of the 33 deaths from
"fever" were reported to the Inspector, showing again the
absolute necessity of my being provided with the returns of
deaths from infectious diseases; this has since been done, so
that I now receive immediate information, and am able to
take measures to prevent the spread of these diseases.
No less than 55 houses in which there were cases of
scarlet fever, and 8 which were infected with enteric (typhoid)
fever were reported to the Inspector, and the proper precautions
taken, permanent sanitary improvements being
carried out in several instances.
Vaccination.

to give the following return of the numbers of persons
Vaccinated or Re-vaccinated by them during the year 1876.
