My Lords and Gentlemen,
The year 1876 was a very healthy one for the Parish, and
for London generally, in spite of the fact that an epidemic of
small-pox was prevalent. Table I. shows as usual the
number of deaths in each quarter of every year from 1868,
and it will be seen that the gross total of deaths recorded in
the Parish in 1876 (that is to say, during the 52 weeks
ending Saturday, December 30th, 1876), was 1868, almost
the same as that of last year, but still a larger number than
that recorded during any year since 1871, and larger than the
average of the last eight years; but this is accounted for by
the large number of persons who died in Public Institutions,
viz., 573, a larger number than in any year of which we
have record : our share, according to population, of the
