SURVEYOR'S REPORT.
My Lords and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit this my Third Annual Report of the
various Works which have been carried out during the
year ended Lady-day, 1877, also a statement showing the
actual cost incurred in each department.
Maintenance of Roads.
At the commencement of this year owing to the long
continued rain towards the close of the preceding one,
many of the roads of the Parish were reduced to a very
bad condition, and consequently the amount of material
required to put them into their present state of repair has
been greatly in excess of what was anticipated would be
necessary.
The expense under this heading, therefore, is much
greater than it has been for several years past.
Last Christmas I explained to the Committee of Works,
that I had then already exceeded my estimate; but as more
road material was required, and in as much as the contract
price for its supply was lower, by 1s. 7d. a ton, than it would
be the following quarter, the Committee directed me to
obtain as much granite as possible at the reduced price:
The purchase of this additional material has, of course,
added considerably to the past year's expense.
