COUNTY OF LONDON DEVELOPMENT PLAN
In March, 1955, the Minister of Housing and Local Government
approved with modifications the Development Plan for the County.
There are no major modifications of the Plan as it affects this
Borough, but the Minister re-zoned for residential purposes two
areas in Southwark which had been zoned for commercial and light
industrial purposes.
The Minister approved a density of population of 136 persons to
the acre for this borough.
SLUM CLEARANCE PROGRAMME, 1956-60
In consultation with the London County Council, joint proposals
for dealing with slum clearance in this Borough during the next five
years have been submitted to the Minister of Housing and Local
Government in accordance with Section 1 of the Housing Repairs
and Rents Act, 1954.
The proposals provide for this Council to deal with 257 unfit
houses during the period 1956-60 and the County Council will deal
with areas comprising 341 houses, making a total of 598 houses.
It has been agreed that the balance of the list of 903 unfit houses
submitted to the County Council are not in such a condition that
they should be dealt with immediately, but further consideration
will be given to their clearance before the end of the five-year
programme.
