438 cases of Whooping Cough were notified to the Medical Officer of
Health from the Schools.
CEREBRO-SPINAL FEVER.
During the year five cases of Cerebro-Spinal Fever were notified,
of which three died.
CHICKEN-POX.
During the year 477 cases of Chicken Pox were notified to the
Medical Officer of Health from the Schools.
PHTHISIS.
The total number of Phthisis cases notified during the year was 644,
of which 165 were voluntary, and 479 were Poor Law cases. Of the 165
voluntary cases 33 were notified from Brompton Hospital, 4 from Guy's
Hospital and 4 from St. Margaret's Hospital. The number of voluntary
notifications, both from medical practitioners and hospitals is very
unsatisfactory, considering that there must be at least 2,500 cases in the
Borough not notified to the Medical Officer, and in no way supervised by
the Health Department.
On receipt of a notification of Phthisis the house is visited and
inspected, and every person connected with the patient examined.
Periodic disinfection is also carried out at short intervals.
The Council decided at the end of the year to have allotted for
Southwark patients five beds in a sanatorium. Arrangements have since
been made for five beds at the Benenden Sanatorium in Kent, belonging
to the National Association for providing Sanatoria for Tuberculosis.
