The Alleys and Courts, with the exception of Ladd's Court, are very
narrow, ranging from 3 feet to 8 feet in width.
The drainage of the houses in many cases has been recently
reconstructed, and the traps and appliances in all the houses are modern
and in good order.
The arrangement of the sewers is marked on the map.
Tables B, C, D and E, show that both as regards ordinary mortality,
and that from infectious disease, the death-rate in this area, during the
two years 1901-2 was exceedingly high, nearly double that of the whole
of the Borough
The Phthisis death-rate was 5.5 per 1,000 in each of the two years,
190L-2, whilst that for the whole of the Borough in 1901 was 2.5 and in
1902 2.6.
In the face of these facts the area may be said to be an unhealthy one,
and to be suitable for being dealt with under the Housing of the Working
Classes Act, 1890.
