It is notable that during the past year the use of preservative in
butter has ceased so far as the samples I have obtained. During the
year 15 samples of butter were purchased and submitted for analysis.
None contained preservatives. During the previous year of 13 samples
analysed five contained boric acid preservative in quantities varying from
0.3 to 0.5 per cent.
Pulmonary Tuberculosis Notification.
During the twelve months 100 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis have
been notified and dealt with.
Unfortunately cases recommended for sanatorium treatment have
been compelled to remain at home amidst insalubrious surroundings
owing to the inadequacy of sanatoria accommodation. The effort to
stamp out the white plague has therefore been considerably handicapped
by this defect, particularly in respect of children affected only by the
initial stages of the disease and to whom removal from their ill-conditioned
homes may mean lives saved. It is to be hoped that early in the
new year sanatoria may be available for all cases that may call for
possible successful treatment at such Institutions.
Of the 22 samples of milk analysed none contained boric acid or
other preservative.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
ALFRED J FIELD, A.R.San.I.,
Sanitary Inspector, and Inspector under
the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts and
Inspector of Canal Boats.
