Bacteriological Examinations.
228 swabbings from throats of doubtful cases of diphtheria were
forwarded for bacteriological examination to the Lister Institute of
Preventive Medicine.* The bacillus diphtherise was isolated in 78
instances (34.2 per cent.), and the pseudo diphtheritic bacillus in 15 cases.
Errors in Diagnosis.
See pages 78-80 as to cases of diphtheria admitted into Metropolitan
Asylums Board's hospitals which were certified as not having the
complaint.
No deductions have been made in respect of these patients.
Condition of House Drainage.
The 85 cases in Poplar were notified from 64 premises, the 97 cases
in Bromley from 86 premises, and the 70 cases in Bow from 62 premises
and of these premises the drains were found to be defective in 18 instances
—four Poplar, two Bromley, and two Bow.
Isolation.
66 cases in Poplar (sub-district), 73 in Bromley, and 61 in Bow were
removed to hospitals of the Metropolitan Asylums Board. Four patients
from Poplar (sub-district) were treated in the East London Hospital for
Children, one patient from Bromley was treated in the London Hospital,
four were treated in the East London Hospital for Children, one in the
Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street, one in the Sick Asylum, one
in the Poplar Hospital, and one in the University College Hospital, and
one patient from Bow was treated in the Queen's Hospital. So that
214 patients out of 252 notified cases in the Borough were isolated.
