The London County Council was prepared to sanction the building,
subject to conditions as to building, and to the dedication of a narrow
strip of land to be thrown into Old Ford Road. These conditions were
embodied in a document required to be sealed by the Council.
The sealing was agreed to by the Council, but it did not commit the
Council to proceed with the scheme, which was not carried out as it was
considered the position was not sufficiently central.
Whilst this report is being written the Public Health and Housing
Committee had under consideration the present provision of shelter
accommodation and of bathing and disinfesting facilities.
In view of the desire of the Works Committee to obtain possession
of the premises at present in use, the Public Health and Housing Committee
were of opinion arrangements should be made to provide new
shelter accommodation, including means for isolation of contacts during
epidemics of infectious disease: also that accommodation should be
provided on the same site for cleansing verminous persons and disinfesting
their clothing, with sufficient suitable provision for treatment of verminous
children sent from the Schools, under agreement with the London
County Council.
The Committee considered the most economical and convenient
arrangement would be to provide the necessary accommodation on a site
adjacent to the present disinfecting station, in a form involving as
moderate a capital cost as possible, and the site adjoining the stone yard
in Glaucus Street appeared to be the most suitable.
The Public Health and Housing Committee recommended the
Council that, subject to the consent of the London County Council being
obtained to the proposed buildings, the vacant land adjoining the stone
yard in Glaucus Street be rented and a Shelter and Disinfesting House
be erected thereon, in accordance with the plan and specification of the
Borough Surveyor, at an estimated cost of £1,260.
