County Council may utilise for cleansing verminous children under these
Acts, premises and apparatus provided by the Borough Council for
cleansing the person and clothing of persons infested with vermin, upon
such payment (if any) as may be agreed, or, in default, settled by the
Local Government Board.
Negotiations with the London County Council for cleansing verminous
school children, under the Acts referred to, have been for some time in
progress.*
During the year 96 school children were bathed and their clothes
disinfested (see Miss Tattersall's report, pages 243 and 244).
Proposed New Shelter and Disinfesting (Bathing)
Accommodation.
The Works Committee reported to the Council that in view of the
completion of the new Dust Destructor, it was desirable the Infectious
Diseases Shelter† at Bromley Depot should be discontinued there in order
that the cottage forming part of the shelter might be available for the
Destructor foreman, who should live on the spot to ensure the efficient
working of the Destructor plant, and it was also advisable the workshop
forming the remainder of the present temporary shelter should be freed
for use by the Works Department. It was suggested that the Council's
former depot in Old Ford Road might be utilised for erection of a shelter,
and in order that a scheme might be prepared and considered the Borough
Surveyor communicated with the London County Council with a view to
sanction being obtained for erection of the shelter on this site if so
decided. The estimated cost was £2,650.
*Whilst this report is being written the Public Health and Housing Committee
reported to the Council they bad directed that the London County Council
Education Committee be informed that the exclusive use of baths at the existing
Cleansing Station will be available between 9 a.m. and 12 noon for the cleansing, under
the London County Council (General Powers) Act, and the Children Act, of 12
verminous school children, at a fee of 2s. for each bath, including disinfection of
clothing.
The Council is bound under Section 60 (4) of the Public Health (London) Act,
1891, to provide temporary shelter for members of any family in which any dangerous
infectious disease has appeared, who have been compelled to leave their dwellings for
the purposo of enabling such dwellings to be disinfected by the Council.
During the year one scarlet fever contact had used the shelter.
