Report of Inspector for "Houses Let in Lodgings" or Occupied
by Members of more than One Family.
Public Health Department,
December 31st, 1907.
To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,—
I beg to hand you my fourth Annual Report, and particulars of the
work carried out under the Bye-laws, for the year ended December 31st,
1907.
Registration.
During the year, 93 houses were registered, making the total number
of houses on the books 1,020.
Inspection and Cleansing.
Of the houses inspected, several were found to be in " fair condition."
It will be seen that a very large number of rooms and other parts of
premises required cleansing; and in some cases where houses were
recently registered and received attention under the Bye-laws for the
first time, walls were stripped of as many as nine and ten papers, a sure
indication that such walls had not been stripped for several years. In
many of the registered houses that receive constant attention there is
now only one paper on the walls. In addition to cleansing, I may say
that 35 window sashes on staircases and in rooms, that were defective,
were repaired and put in working order, to conform with the Bye-laws.
Legal Proceedings.
In March, the owner of 24, Devas Street was summoned at Thames
Police Court for not supplying certain information respecting houses
in Bromley. Fined £2 and £1 3s. costs.
In June, a lodger at a house in Lamprell Street, Old Ford, was
summoned at Old Street Police Court for not complying with notices to
abate overcrowding. Fined £1 and 2s. costs.
