MILKSHOPS.†
Dairies, Cowsheds and Milkshops Order.
Proposed Prohibition of the Sale of Milk on Unsuitable Premises.
At the end of the year there were in the Borough 349 registered
premises (including 15 cow-houses, 3 Poplar, 5 Bromley and 7 Bow)
where milk is sold, 111 Poplar, 143 Bromley and 95 Bow. These milkshops
were kept under observation (see Inspectors' reports, pages 172,
178, 184, 189, 197, 204 and 212.
24 milkshops had been placed on the register during the year,
8 Poplar, 5 Bromley and 11 Bow. 52 Premises were on account of change
of owners re-registered as milkshops, 9 Poplar, 28 Bromley and 15 Bow.
The sale of milk was discontinued on 38 premises—16 Poplar, 14
Bromley and 8 Bow.
For milkshops connected with infectious diseases, see page 62.
Proposed Prohibition of the Sale of Milk on Unsuitable
Premises.
The Holborn Borough Council called attention to the fact that
Borough Councils have no power to refuse to register a milkseller,
however unsuiable the premises may be, nor to remove a milkshop from
the register if the milkshop subsequently becomes unsuitable, although the
milkseller is bound to comply with the regulations as to dairies and milkshops.
The Holborn Borough Council had requested the London County
Council to insert in its next General Powers Bill provisions to confer
powers on the Councils of the Metropolitan Cities and Boroughs to enable
them to prohibit the sale of milk on unsuitable premises.
The Publio Health and Housing Committee were of opinion it is
desirable powers should be conferred as proposed, and recommended the
Council to support the application of the Holborn Borough Council to the
London County Council.
