detecting any infringement of Part VIII. of the London County
Council (General Powers) Act, 1902, also each itinerant vendor's
barrow has been inspected and in each instance the manufacturer's
name was found to be legibly fixed on the barrow. At the same
time the utensils were examined and found to be, as far as possible,
in a clean condition.
Unsound Food—Shops and Stalls.
The shops and stalls: in my district have been regularly inspected
with a view of detecting unsound and unwholesome food, and in
a few instances parcels of fish, meat and fruit after inspection were
surrendered by the owners, who were in each case severely
cautioned. During the year a few cases of fish, fruit and vegetables
have been brought to the Public Health Office by tradespeople
and costermongers, who have found on arrival home from market,
that the articles were not of the same quality as the samples shown
to them, and, on examination, were found to be totally unfit for
the food of man. The goods were taken to Glaucus Street Depot
and destroyed, certificates given, so that the purchasers were in a
position to demand the return of their money.
Riverside Wharves where Food is Stored, &c.
There is only one wharf in the district where food (all tinned
food) is shipped and landed, Concordia Wharf, Cold Harbour.
These premises have been carefully inspected and kept under
strict supervision during the past year, and during that time 697
tins (various sizes) of beef, mutton, salmon, rabbits, chicken and
soup were found to be blown or otherwise damaged, and on examination
proved to be unfit for human consumption, they were condemned
by consent of the manager, who stated they were not
intended for sale.
Inspection of Schools and Board Schools.
In accordance with your instructions, the whole of the schools in
the district have been thoroughly inspected, particularly with
respect to the drinking and domestic water supplies and the
cleansing of cisterns and drinking utensils, and fully reported to
the Committee.
