Factory and Workshops.
I have, by your instructions, inspected the workshops and workplaces
in the district where male labour only is employed; the
number of males employed in each case being checked, and any
alteration found duly reported, and entered in the register kept for
that purpose. Particular attention has been given to the sanitary
accommodation, cleanliness, light and ventilation, in two instances
the workpeople were without W. C. accommodation, one has been
fixed and the other about to be fixed.
Smoke Nuisances.
During the past year considerably less complaints have been
received with regard to the above-named nuisances, particularly in
connection with Orchard Place, where most of the shafts are

been kept under special observation, and when nuisances have
occurred the usual notices have been served and the nuisances
satisfactorily abated. More often than not the fault has been
through bad stoking.
On no occasion has there been cause for a summons to be taken
out.
Coffee Houses, Restaurants, Private Hotels, Sausage Makers,
Fried Fish Shops, &c.
During the past year special supervision has been given to these
premises, all of which have been inspected with regard to the
cleanliness, light and ventilation, and general sanitary conditions.
Limewashing in nearly every case was found necessary, particulars of
which have been duly reported to the Public Health and Housing
Committee. The food at each premises has been examined at each
visit, and there has been no cause for complaint.
Ice Cream Manufacturers and Itinerant Vendors.
In accordance with your instructions all the premises
where ice cream is prepared have been inspected with a view of
