A summons against the owner of a traction engine was taken out,
the result of which is reported further on under the Public Health
Act.
Bakehouses.
These now number 25, and have been regularly inspected during
the year. The bi-annual cleansing has been carried out without
any difficulty. The troughs in the undergrounds, which are now
all on wheels, are frequently moved out, and the surroundings
properly cleansed. This could not be done formerly owing to the
troughs being a fixture. One new factory bakehouse has been
added to the list, and is chiefly used for baking Passover Cakes.
On several occasions I had spoken to one master-baker, a
German, about letting some 2 dozen fowls run loose in his bakehouse,
and causing a great nuisance. As he took little notice a
letter was sent by your instructions threatening legal proceedings,
and no further cause was given for complaint, the fowls being
kept under proper control.
The man, about whose dirty habits in his bakehouse I complained
of last year, has left the district, moving away in the night,
no one knows of his whereabouts, and the shop is closed.
Dairies, Cowsheds, Milkshops and Slaughter Houses.
These places have received their due amount of attention throughout
the year. Particular notice has been paid to the dippers and
receptacles for the storage of milk, especially in the small general
shops, and nearly every milk pan in the district is now kept covered
with a proper dust tight cover.
The cowsheds, before the renewal of licenses, have been visited,
and thoroughly inspected, special attention being paid to overhead
beams and woodwork.
The register of milkshops requires frequently altering and
amending, owing to so many removals of the persons registered to
sell milk.
