Drains.
The drains of 209 premises have been tested with smoke or
scent tests, and in 97 cases were found to be defective and allowing
free escape of foul gas from same.
During the year the drains of the following premises were taken
out (where necessary right through to the sewer)1 and reconstructed,
and where practicable, in order to comply with the by-laws of the
L.C.C. and Borough Council, were intercepted, ventilated, and
provided with proper means of access for clearing in times of
stoppage in same, the whole being subjected to the hydraulic test,
before being passed as satisfactory. In a number of instances,
there are combined systems among those dealt with: —
