The provision of proper mortuary accommodation was again
under the consideration of the Public Health and Housing Committee.
Four mortuaries are possessed by the Council: —
Bickmore Street, Poplar | Originally provided by the Over-seers of the respective parishes for the reception of bodies cast ashore or found in the streets. |
St. Leonards Road, Bromley | |
Bow Church, Bow | |
Wellington Road | Originally provided by the Poplar District Board for the reception of bodies of persons who died from infectious diseases. |
Pending the provision of a proper mortuary, that at Bickmore
Street has been used as a mortuary and post-mortem room under
the Public Health (London) Act.
The Council is required by the Public Health (London) Act
1891, to provide a mortuary and may make bye-laws with respect
to the management and charges for the use of same. If required
by the London County Council separate accommodation for the
reception of dead bodies, during the time required to make postmortem
examinations ordered by the Coroner, shall be provided.
