The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research—Fuel Research, by means of the data thus available obtains
added knowledge of the nature and amount of atmospheric pollution which, it is hoped, will eventually lead to effective
action to reduce pollution of the atmosphere. This can only be achieved by continuous measurement by scientific
standardised methods, and this Council, in concert with other Metropolitan Borough Councils, by the installation of
standardised deposit gauges in their areas are making a valuable contribution to these investigations.
