Falconer Mews.
This area, comprising Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4, Falconer Mews, together with a building in the rear of No. 165,
Canterbury Road, was declared to be a clearance area on the 5th May, 1938. The buildings are of the ordinary
mews type and partly surround a court, which is a cul-de-sac entered from the south side of Canterbury Road
Eighteen person will be displaced from this area.
Clarendon Street Re-development Area.
In last year's report reference was made to an area bounded by the rear boundaries cf the properties in
Harrow Road, the canal, the west side of Lord Hills Road and the north side of Bourne Terrace which the
Council had declared to be a proposed Re-development Area. Section 35 of the Housing Act, 1936, provides
that within six months after a local authority have passed such a resolution or within such extended period
as the Minister of Health may allow, the authority shall prepare and submit to the Minister a re-development
plan of the area. In view of negotiations which were proceeding with the Church authorities relative to St.
Mary Magdalene's School premises it became necessary for application to be made to the Minister to extend
the period in which the plan was to be submitted from six to twelve months. The plan was subsequently
exhibited in the Council Chamber; notice published in the local Press that the plan had been prepared ; where
the plan could be inspected; the manner in which objections thereto could be made; and a notice to the like
effect was served on every owner, lessee and occupier of land in the defined area and on all statutory undertakers
owning apparatus in the area.

Houses Unfit fob Human Habitation.

The following figures show the extent of the Council's operations during 1938:—

Number of basement rooms closed for human habitation228
Number of basement rooms closed for sleeping purposes only25
Number of dwelling-houses or parts of dwelling-houses closed for human habitation (other than basement rooms)158
Number of persons displaced or who will be displaced as a result of the Council's operations930

Number of displaced persons re-housed on Paddington Borough Council Estates200

A number ot displaced persons have found accommodation through their own ettorts, while
others are awaiting suitable vacancies on London County Council Estates.
In lieu of making closing orders the Council, in 30 instances, after consultation with owners,
accepted undertakings from them as empowered by Section 11 (3) of the Housing Act, 1936. Such
undertakings possess the advantage of expediting procedure, whilst securing the closure of the parts
of the premises to which they refer as effectively as though closing orders had been made.
Thirty-four closing orders were determined or undertakings cancelled during the year and 65 other
premises made fit for human habitation without recourse to formal proceedings under the Housing
Act. A summary of the major works executed in connection with these premises is given below:—
