There were 254 inspections made during the year. The number of animals slaughtered,
so far as is known, was 3,994, comprising 200 bullocks, and 3,794 sheep, being an increase
of 903 sheep, as compared with 1931. The number of bullocks slaughtered was the same as
in 1931.

The following Table shows the number of organs destroyed and the diseases with which they were affected.

In addition to the animals slaughtered in the licensed slaughterhouses, a number of
pig carcases arrive in the Borough which have not been previously inspected. During 1932,
the number of carcases was 142. On examination it was found necessary to destroy one
head and pieces weighing 10lbs. affected with tuberculosis.
Public Health (Meat) Regulations, 1924.—It was not found necessary to take any legal
proceedings under these Regulations during the year. Occasional defaults were dealt with
by means of a caution.
Poultry Slaughtering.—This business is dealt with by special bye-laws. The only poultry
slaughterhouse in the Borough is situated at No. 51, Shirland Road. During the year 54
inspections were made and approximately 4,900 head of poultry were slaughtered.
Unsound Food.—Summonses were issued against three vendors for exposing for sale
various articles of food which were unfit for human consumption. Fines were indicted and
costs awarded in all cases. (See Legal Proceedings. page 53.)
Food Purveyors.—At the end of the year there were some 870 purveyors of food in the
Borough, classified as follows:—Butchers 84, Fishmongers 26, Fried Fish 35, Refreshments
129, Greengrocers 105, Milk 122, General 68, Confectioners 121, Provisions 63, Grocers 117.
In addition to the above premises there are 88 licensed Street Traders selling food within
the Borough, namely:—Fruit and Vegetables 61, Ice Cream 12, Light Refreshments 12, Fish
1, Poultry 1, Sweets 1. These with the storage premises of 20 Street Traders licensed by
other Boroughs, are under constant supervision.
There were 7 premises on which fish curing was performed, this business as well as fish
frying, being regulated by special bye-laws.
The number of visits of inspection paid to premises occupied by food purveyors was
2,009.
Section 5 of the London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1932, provides that any
premises (other than premises used as a club, hotel or restaurant) used or proposed to be
used for the preparation or manufacture of sausages, potted, pressed, pickled or preserved
meat, fish or other food intended for sale shall be registered by the owner or occupier, or
intending occupier, thereof with the sanitary authority. At the close of the year the Register
contained the addresses of 48 premises.
Ice Cream.—There were 144 shops at which ice-cream was known to be sold, comprising
the following kinds of businesses:—Bakers 9, General 16, Milk 12, Confectioners 58, Refreshments
42, Wholesale 3, Newsagents 2, Greengrocer 1, Fancy Goods 1.
One hundred and fifty (150) inspections of premises were made.
Ice-cream was sold from 25 barrows stored within the Borough and from 35 barrows
stored outside the Borough.
