BIRTHS.
The number of births registered in the Borough during 1927 was 2,064, and, in addition,
152 occurred outside the Borough to Paddington residents in excess of those occurring in
Paddington to residents of other localities, making a total of 2,216 births. The birth-rate
for 1927 was therefore 1553 per 1,000 of the population.
Of the 2,216 births, 1,097 were those of males and 1,119 those of females, and of these
120 males and 115 females were illegitimate.
The Registrar-General's final figure for the nett number of births is given as 2,230, but
this does not substantially affect the figure for the birth-rate given above.
It will be seen on reference to the summary of vital statistics on page 5 that although the
actual number of births in Paddington has declined yearly since the War there is an apparent
small increase in the rate in 1927. This increase in the birth-rate is probably not a real one
and due to the fact that the population of the Borough is not accurately known.

Illegitimate Births.—These were 235 in number, or 10.60per cent, of the total number of
births. The proportion of illegitimate births varies remarkably in the different wards as is
shown in the table below:—
