BIRTHS.
1913. In 14 cases both the twins were males, in 5 both females, and in 16 the sexes were
mixed. The first group includes one instance of twins born to non-resident parents. Sixty-two
of the births registered during the year occurred in the Lying-in Wards of the Workhouse, equal
to a percentage of 2.3 of the total births in the Borough, as compared with 2.8 per cent. in 1913,
3.2 per cent. in 1912, and 3.8 per cent. in 1911.
The births registered locally included those of 49 children born to non-resident parents, 16
of the children (9 males and 7 females) being born in the Workhouse. The inward transfers
received at the end of the year from the Registrar-General numbered 274, 137 of each sex.

compared with a rate of 20.87 in 1913, and an average of 21.11 for the five years 1909-13. (See
Table I., Appendix.) The rates recorded last year in Queen's Park, Harrow Road, and
Lancaster Gate (East) Wards were higher than those recorded in 1913. In the two last-named
Wards the rates were in excess of the averages for the preceding quinquennium. In Table II.,
Appendix, the births allocated to each Ward during the six years 1909-14 are set out.
Table 3 has been compiled from the uncorrected totals* given in the Quarterly Reports of
*In the case of St. Marylebone the corrected total has always been used on account of the great excess of
non-resident births taking place in Queen Charlotte's Lying-in Hospital registered in that Borough.
