the fatalities at home and in institutions during the past four years. As a rule, only patients
seriously ill or whose home conditions are unsatisfactory are removed to institutions, so that the
fatality among them is usually much higher than among those remaining at home.

WHOOPING COUGH.
Cases of whooping cough come to the knowledge of the Department chiefly by means of
the "Form 84" forwarded by the head-teachers of schools on the exclusion of children who are
either sufferers or who come from homes where the disease exists.
The corrected total arrived at after a careful analysis of the cases at the end of the year
was 558, being 3 more than the number derived from the weekly tabulation. (See below.)

The morbidity rate last year was 3.92 per 1,000 persons of all ages, as compared with 4.52
in 1913 and 264 in 1912, and an average (1909-13) of 3.83. (See next page.) The morbidity
rates recorded in the Wards are shown in Table 21.
