DEATHS IN INSTITUTIONS.
Among the 1,889 deaths registered within the Borough during the year there were 798
(42.2 per cent.) which occurred in local public institutions. Those 798 deaths included 349 (43.7
percent.) of non.residents. In 1911, 41.1 per cent. of the deaths in the Borough occurred in
public institutions, 45.0 per cent. of the deceased persons being non.residents. Particulars as to
the numbers dying in each local institution are given in Tables VII. and VIII., Appendix A,
while the same details relating to deaths in outlying institutions will be found in Table IX.
The corrected number of deaths of residents in institutions was 677 last year, as compared
with 665 in 1911. The 677 deaths (equivalent to 38.2 per cent. of the corrected total) included
367 of males (417 per cent. of all deaths of males) and 310 of females (34'7 per cent.). In 1911
the percentage of deaths in institutions was 35 8, and the average for 1907.11, 347. Below will
be found a tabular statement of the proportions (percentages) of deaths (fully corrected) in each
ward of the Borough.
1912 38.9 33.1 34. 7 37.6 52 .2 28. 0 10.8 35 .5
1911 38.2 33.4 33 4 32.8 46.8 23.0 12.1 35.0
1907-11 35.3 31.9 29.6 33.3 45.2 20.7 21.5 28.6
The proportion of institutional deaths was slightly lower last year (10.8 per cent.) in
Lancaster Gate, East, Ward than in 1911 (121 per cent.), and in Harrow Road (331 in 1912,
334 in 1911). In Lancaster Gate, East, Ward only was last year's figure (10.8) below the
average for 1907.11 (21.5). The proportion observed in Church Ward last year (52.2 per cent.)
was much the highest in the series and shows notable increase above the quinquennial average
(45 2 per cent).
Grouping the institutions into two classes, viz., rate.supported and voluntary, it is found that
the deaths in the former formed 26'2 per cent. of all deaths, and in the latter 11 .7. The annual
averages for 1907.11 were 23.4 and 10.8 per cent. respectively. From the analysis given below
it will be seen that the proportion of deaths in lunatic asylums (2.5) was the only one below the
average (2 6). The proportion (16) recorded in the hospitals of the Metropolitan Asylums Board
is not strictly comparable with the proportion recorded during 1907.11, as admission now
extends to several diseases not previously received.
