* Taken from Report [Cd. 3864] of Board of Trade, page 6.

During the five years 1896-1900 the total mortality (see below) in the area averaged 28.88
per 1,000 inhabitants, which rate had fallen to 2675 in the five years 1907-11. The greater part
of the decrease was noted among children aged 0-10 years, the mortality among them decreasing
from 46.87 to 41.55 (a fall of 113 per cent., as compared with one of 2 8 per cent. at ages over
10). The mortality from the diarrhoeal diseases decreased from 2.05 to 192 per 1,000 persons
of all ages, and generally lower rates were recorded in the second period from all the developmental
diseases, e.g., premature birth, convulsions, atrophy and debility, &c., &c. On the other
hand, the mortality from the tuberculous diseases, bronchitis and pneumonia, and the diseases
included among "other causes" (mostly adult diseases),showed very little change, and as regards
" other causes " a distinct increase.
