HOUSING. 93
Overcrowding.—The By-laws prescribe minimum air allowances of 400 cubic feet for
persons aged 10 years and upwards, and 200 cubic feet for those under that age, living in
rooms which are used day and night, i.e., for "living and sleeping," and allowances of 300 and
1-50 cubic feet (respectively) in rooms which are used for sleeping only. In 255 tenements inspected
last year the inhabitants were found to be in excess of the numbers prescribed by the
above standards. The results of the enumeration given above indicate a slight improvement in
the housing of the inhabitants generally, and the increase in the number of cases of overcrowding
is, therefore, somewhat surprising:—
