METEOROLOGY.
for the 35 years 1875-1909. In August only 0 49 in. was measured, as compared with an
average of 2*33 ins. In July, the thunderstorm of the 28th yielded 0.89 in. of rain, otherwise
that month would have been even drier than August. The excessive rainfall of November and
December, amounting to 7.84 ins. at Camden Square (3.43 ins. in excess of the average for the
two months), brought the year's total fall up to the average.
The amount of harm which may be expected to accrue to vegetation, &c., from such
brilliant, hot, and dry weather as that of the past summer may be gauged by the fact that the
amount of water evaporated during July-September last from a tank having a superficial area
of 36 sq. ft. and a depth of 18 ins., was equivalent to a rainfall of 9.75 ins., the measured rainfall
during that same period being only 2.97 ins. Rain, it may be added, is generally regarded as a
preventive of epidemics of summer diarrhœa.
