ADMINISTRATIVE WORK.
Table 44 gives the numbers of children excluded from school during the year on account
of sore throat, ringworm, &c. In addition to the numbers set out in the table there were
4 cases of sore throat reported from outlying schools, 15 of ringworm, 2 of scabies, and 14 of
"vermin." There were also 14 other cases of "vermin" in which the schools attended were
either not known or not noted. The total number of children coming under the supervision of
the Department was 392, viz., sore throat, 82 ; ringworm, 188 ; scabies, 30 ; "vermin," 97.
Sore Throat.—Each case has been visited and medical advice urged. If there had been
any cases of diphtheria in the school re-admission was not sanctioned until the child had
been certified free from infection—as demonstrated by bacteriological test.
The distribution of cases throughout the year is of some interest.

The comparatively larger numbers of June and July were due to the inquiries at Moberly
School after an outbreak of diphtheria already referred to, while those noted in the last four months
of the year were divided fairly equally among Moberly, Essendine, St. Peter's, and Campbell
Street. Just over half the children (45) were in infants' schools. The total of 82 children
included 51 boys and 31 girls. Twenty-eight (28) children and 5 adults were seen at the Town
Hall by the Medical Officer of Health, swabs (38, including repeats) being taken from them for
bacteriological examination. In 6 swabs the Klebs-Loffler bacillus was present, and in 5 the
Hoffmann.
