Mortality in Special Areas.—In 1901 tv/o special reports on the housing conditions, &c., of
certain parts of the Borough were submitted to the Council, the first giving brief accounts of six
areas or insula and the second very full details with reference to the largest of the areas, that
known as the "Clarendon Street Area." Since 1905, when the returns relating to the registration
of births were first received, particulars have been taken out annually of the infantile
mortality rates of the six areas. An examination of the figures will throw further light on the
causes of the increased mortality among infants recorded in the Borough last year.
In Table 33 will be found the numbers of births and deaths at ages under one allocated to
each of the six areas, together with the mortality rates for the past and previous years. It will
be seen that with the exception of that recorded in "Queen's Park" (92) the rate recorded last
