mortality in childhood.
The "corrected" rate in the Borough was 129 per 1,000 births, after deduction of those of
non-resident and inclusion of those in out-lying parts traced by the Department. The numbers
of births and deaths (0—1 year) used in the calculations of the " corrected " rates are given in
Table II., Appendix A.
In Table 30 comparisons are made for the Borough and each of the Wards between —
(a) the nett rates recorded in the four quarters of the past year ;
and (b) the corrected rates for the whole year,
and the corresponding mean rates for the five years 1906-10.

* Calculated on births corrected for non residents only.
t Calculated on births corrected for non-residents and out-lying institutions (Departmental returns).
The nett rates exhibit wide fluctuations from quarter to quarter and in various Wards in the
same quarter. Rates of zero were recorded in Lancaster Gate, West, Ward (first quarter) and
East (third and fourth quarters). The maximum and minimum Ward rates in each quarter
were—

The corrected rate for the year in the Borough was 129 per 1,000 children of both sexes,
25 (24 per cent.) in excess of the average (104), the rate among males (140) being 25 per 1,000
above the average (115), and that for females (119) 26 in excess of the average (93). The
greatest departure from the average in the rates recorded in the Wards was observed in
Lancaster Gate, West, and amounted to an increase of 180 per cent., last year's rate of 140
being 90 per 1,000 in excess of the average (50). In Maida Vale the increase in the rate
was only 10 per cent. and that in Church Ward 13 per cent. The rate for Lancaster Gate,
East, Ward (43) was 42 per cent. below the average. The greatest mortality among males
(205) was recorded in Westbourne Ward, and the lowest (47) in Lancaster Gate, East; while
among females the maximum rate (166) was recorded in Church, and the minimum (37) in
Lancaster Gate, East. The mortality among females was particularly low in Maida Vale (69)
and Westbourne (98) Wards. It is remarkable that that last Ward should have so low a rate
for females, having regard to the high rate for males already mentioned.
* The rate of 444 recorded in Lancaster Gate, West, Ward being based on 9 births and 4 deaths, is too
unreliable to be taken note of.
