hand, somewhat more fatal, especially among males. In 1910 the fatality was 3.6 per 100 cases
(both sexes), as compared with 3"8 last year. Among males the fatality was 4.4 last year, or
0-9 above the rate recorded in 1910. The rate among females was slightly lower (see below).
Doubtless the season at which the disease was prevalent accounts to a large extent for the
increased fatality, 1,048 cases being reported during the six months October to March, 1910-11,
as compared with 698 in the same six months of 1909-10.

Some uncertainty attaches to the Ward distribution of attacks of the disease, the cases
being almost entirely known through the reports of the staffs of the public elementary schools.
