SEPl'IC DISEASES.
The total deaths from puerperal fever according to the Department's records was 5, viz.,
the three just referred to and two unnotified deaths, one the termination of an unreported case
dating from 1910, and the other a death belonging to Paddington which occurred in Westminster.
Mortality in Childbed.—In addition to the 5 deaths from puerperal fever, there were
5 other deaths from " accidents and diseases of parturition." Below the mortality (or, perhaps,
more correctly the fatality) attaching to child-birth last year is compared with the average
figures for 1906-10, as deduced from the records kept by the Department.
Fatality per 100 Births.
1911. 1906-10.
Puerperal Fever 016 0.08
Accidents and Diseases of Parturition 0.16 0.30
Total 0.33 0.38
The foregoing show a slight improvement last year in comparison with the average, but
taking the Registrar-General's figures (Table 15), the improvement was really considerable.
The total fatality recorded in the Borough was the lowest of the whole series. In Table 16 the
changes noted in the fatality, &c., in the individual Wards are set out. The table is more
curious than instructive.

Erysipelas.—The reported cases numbered 117 last year, or rather 116, as one patient
had two attacks during the year. The figures given in Tables 5 (whole Borough) and 7 (Wards)
tell practically all that can be said about the incidence of the disease during the past six years.
The morbidity rates are given in Table 6.
Last year's cases included 50 of males and 67 of females. Twenty-two of the patients
(18 9 per cent.) received institutional treatment, or nearly double the proportion noted in 1910
(10 per cent.). The deaths during the year numbered 9, making the fatality 7'6 per cent. (.3 per
cent, in the preceding year).

other Septic Diseases.-Eleven deaths were recorded under this heading. A tabulation of the numbers of deaths (including those from erysipelas) registered during the past six years is appended:-
