the patients sent away there were 12 deaths, 11 from diphtheria and 1 (an "error") from
pulmonary tuberculosis (male, aet. 1 year: bacteriological test, Klebs-Loffler present). Among
the 14 patients treated at home there was one death. (See Table 13.)

* Per cent, of all cases reported.
† Per cent. of attacks, after correction for errors of diagnosis. Based on cases
and deaths reported during the year.
‡ Per 1,000 persons of all ages. Based on total number of deaths recorded.
The 12 deaths represent a fatality of 8.0 per cent, (on the 154 correctly diagnosed cases), as
compared with a mean fatality of 9.6 per cent, (also on correctly diagnosed cases) during
1906-10. Last year the fatalities observed in the Wards ranged from zero (Hyde Park) to
19.0 per cent, in Westbourne. In Lancaster Gate, West and East Wards, the fatalities were
12.5 and 14.2 per cent. respectively. It should be remembered that all those fatalities are based
on very small numbers, and much importance should not, therefore, be attached to them.
The 12 deaths from diphtheria included one from "croup," and were equivalent to a mortality
of 0.08 per 1,000, 0.01 less than the mean rate for 1906-10. The numbers of deaths and the
mortality rates for the six years are given below:—
1906. 1907. 1908. 1909. 1910. 1911.
Deaths 15 20 16 11 9 12
Mortality 0.10 0.13 0.11 0.07 0.06 0.08
The rates for the circumjacent districts will be found in Table 10.
