It has not been thought worth while to get out tables showing the sex-age incidence of the
notified diseases, no information as to the numbers of individuals in each sex-age group being
available. The only other table to be presented this year is Table 7, which shows the numbers of
cases of the principal diseases reported during each of the past six years in each of the Wards.
The changes shown by that table will be considered in a subsequent part of this report.
DEATHS: MORTALITY.

During the year 2,074 deaths were registered within the Borough, 1,059 of males and 1,015 of females, equivalent to a crude* mortality rate of 14.55 per 1,000 persons of all ages. A comparison of the crude rates for each of the four quarters of the past three years is given below:—

Crude Mortality Rates.
Quarters.1.2.3.4.
191116.9413.7714.0313.44
191019.7114.8411.2514.17
190915.6914.1010.6815.69

*The "crude" rate is that based on the number of deaths registered within the district during the year; the
"nett" rate, that based on the number after exclusion of deaths of non-residents within and inclusion of those of
residents beyond the district; and the " corrected " rate, the nett rate multiplied by the correction factor necessary
for the sex-age constitution of the population to reduce the mortality to that of a population of standard sex-age
constitution. On this occasion no corrected rates can be given.
