CANCER. 29
CANCER.
The deaths from the various new growths which are included under this general term
numbered 159 in 1903, fell to 156 and 149 in 1904 and 1905, and increased thereafter to 164
in 1906, 178 in 1907, and 185 last year. The mortality (l-20) of the past year is the highest
on record, and, while exceeding that of the previous year by 0*01 only, was 0*12 above the
quinquennial mean rate (1'08). The mean rate for the five years 1891-94 was 0'86, 0'34 less
than the rate for the past year.
Referring to Table 10, it will be seen that the local rate (as recorded) was exceeded by
that for Marylebone (1*22), and that in Hampstead and Willesden only were sensible
reductions from the mean rates observed. In Table 19 the rates obtained by correction for
sex-age variations in the populations are set out. The rates for the past year in Queen's
Park (1*49), Maida Vale (1*32) and Church (1'42) Wards exceeded that for the Borough (1'07),
while those for Westbourne (0*67), Lancaster Gate, West (0'88), and Hyde Park (0*85)
were the only three lower than the mean rates. In the majority of the Wards the rates, both
for 1908 and for 1903-07, exceeded the standard rates. Of the rates recorded during the year
in the Metropolis and the districts adjacent to the Borough, those of Kensington and
Hampstead were the exceptions to the general increase above the standard rates.

The numbers of deaths from the various forms of malignant new growths, and the parts
affected by such growths, are given in Table 20, to which are appended the ages at death.
The deaths comprised 70 of males and 115 of females, equivalent to mortalities of 1'06 and
1*30 per 1,000 of each sex, all ages. The mean rates for 1903-07 were 0*96 and 1T6
respectively.
