The figures given in the foregoing table show that corrections are necessary in the
averages already given for males, females, and persons at all ages. Such corrections have
been made by applying the averages for each sex-age group to the actual numbers of deaths
recorded, and by striking averages of the theoretical total durations thus obtained. By this
method the following averages were obtained :—
Males, all ages ... 22*23 months
Females, all ages ... 30*73 ,,
Persons, ,, ... 25*66 ,,
At present the only known records of any calculation of the average duration of
•consumption are those of Bayle and Louis, quoted in the "Encyclopaedia of Medicine" (1835),
Vol. IV., p. 276. The average duration obtained from their observations (based on hospital
experience) was 23 months, or nearly 3 months less than the average (25*66, say, 26 months)
given above. Bayle's and Louis's observations are of great age, and do not distinguish the
sexes or the ages at death. It may be added in conclusion lhat among their cases were 2
lasting less than one month, and 5 lasting from 25 to 40 years. The 476 " sample " cases
included 6 with durations of 1—2 months, while the longest durations were among men, 10
years, and among women, 30 years.
Institutional Segregation.—So much stress has been laid on the part played by the isolation
of consumptives in the recorded diminution of the mortality from the disease, that it has
been thought desirable to place on record the proportions (percentages) of deaths in institutions
of all classes. At present the records go back to 1901 only, but it is hoped to be able
to carry them back to 1891 at least.
