The rates just referred to take no account of differences in the sex-age composition of
the populations. A better comparison would be that of sex-age-group rates such as are given in
Table 9, but the necessary data for such comparison are not available. The effects of sex-age
variations can be eliminated by the determination of "standard rates" from which
" correction factors " can be obtained which, when applied to annual rates, give strictly comparable
"corrected rates." Such standard rates and corrected rates are given in Table 11.
The standard rate for the Borough (17.10) is higher than all the others, except that of
the Metropolis (17.31), the lowest of the series being that of Westminster (15.46). The
corrected death rate for the Borough (13.15) is, however, the fifth, instead of the second, in
order of magnitude, the rates for Hampstead (11.87) and Willesden (11.22) being the only
