DEATHS. 9
Four hundred (400) deaths of non-residents were recorded in the Borough, an increase of
28 above the number for the preceding year. In out-lying districts 217 deaths of residents, 15
less than in 1907, took place. The nett total of deaths of residents was, therefore, 1,896,
showing a reduction of 118 below the number for 1907, and of 204 below the decennial
average, 2,100. (Table I., Appendix A.). The nett mortality was at the rate of 12.36 last year,
as compared with rates of 13.46 for 1907, and of 14.42 for the decennium, 1898-1907. The
difference between the rate for last year and the maximum rate recorded since 1898, viz., 4.27
in 1899, represents a saving of 643 lives during the year. Table II., Appendix A., shows the nett
numbers of deaths of residents of the Borough, and its Wards, for each year since 1901. The
causes of such deaths during the past year are given in Tables III. and IV. Table 8 gives the
e x-mortality at all ages, and Table 9 for six age-groups, in each case for the whole Borough
and each Ward, the quinquennial mean rates being added for comparison.

The rates (Table 8) for both sexes, all ages, were in every instance below the corresponding
means, the largest reduction being recorded in Lancaster Gate, East, Ward (1.57)—that noted in
Church Ward (1.46) being a good second—and the smallest in Westbourne Ward (0.01).
Increased rates for males were recorded in three Wards, viz., Queen's Park, Harrow Road
and Lancaster Gate, West, and for females in Maida Vale and Westbourne. The sex-agegroup
rates for the Borough as a whole (Table 9) were in every case below the means, but
there was no corresponding uniformity in the rates for the individual Wards. The most
satisfactory feature about the figures given in the Table, is the general reduction in the rates
for ages under five years.
Comparing last year's rate for the Borough (12.24 according to the figures published by
the Registrar-General) with the rates for the Metropolis and districts adjacent to the Borough
(Table 10) it is found that the Borough rate was fifth in order of magnitude, two rates, viz.,
those for Hampstead (10.57) and Willesden (10.47) being lower. Last year's rate for
Hampstead (1057) was the only one in excess of the quinquennial mean (9.46).
