clinic deals with bronchitis and its complications. There is also the aftercare of a large
number of cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, most of it now cured or quiescent, leaving
lung scars doubtless responsible for various chest symptoms. There is in addition
much investigation to exclude pulmonary neoplasms.
The new notifications from tuberculosis in 1967 remain fairly steady at 79. 19 of
these were positive soon after diagnosis, and some were quite severe in extent. There
are now relatively few cases of non-pulmonary tuberculosis such as tuberculosis of
glands, but they still crop up from time to time. Among the thousand or so known
cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, 34 produced positive sputum for tubercle bacilli
during the year. Many of the new cases came from Carrington House, and a fair
number of elderly bronchitic males were also seen from there. I have notes of 37
pulmonary neoplasms found in 1967. Heavy smoking remains, in my view one of the
largest single factors in the causation. I noted down the heavy cigarette smokers
amongst those attending with chest symptoms, and found 77 males and 26 females
smoking over thirty cigarettes daily.
Some of my patients have expressed concern at the proposed move of the Deptford
Chest Clinic to the New Greenwich District Hospital, chiefly on the grounds of
increased distance and associations with the present department.
The total attendance figure during the year was just short of 6,000 in number.
1,442 were new cases with varying chest symptoms attending the clinic for the first
time.
