CHEST CLINIC, LEWISHAM
I am indebted to Dr. M. Farquharson for the following report concerning the Chest
Clinic at Blagdon Road of which she is the Consultant Physician:
The reduction in the number of newly notified cases of tuberculosis has continued
in 1967. 44 cases were diagnosed at the Chest Clinic as compared with 78 in 1966.
This figure comprises 28 men, 12 women and 4 children. The total tuberculosis
register has been reduced by 194 to 1,547. The contact clinics were well attended
during the year and B.C.G. was given to 190 infants and children. The Health Visitors
carried out 4,367 home visits.
The overall work of the Chest Clinic continues at a steady level. There were 20,273
attendances (excluding after-care) and 2,059 new patients were examined. Acute
chest infections, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma have been the most
frequent problem, and for the third year in succession the number of new cases of
carcinoma of the lung have exceeded those of tuberculosis.

part of the work, however, is concerned with people residing within fairly easy reach
of the clinic.
Over the years, I have found that bronchitis and its complications is prevalent in
Deptford, and in addition to the extremes of life is seen particularly in middle-aged
males and among quite a number of young people. Much of the present work of the
