Other samples
In addition to samples submitted to the public analyst or bacteriologist
for routine sampling, the following were submitted for various
reasons, but mainly because of complaints received or as a result of
enquiries made into cases of food poisoning:—

Unsound food
Approximately 6½ tons of food were surrendered as unfit for human
consumption. This was dealt with by the Council's food inspectors and
consisted of meat, fruit pulp, fish, vegetables etc.
Shops Act, 1950—section 38
2 certificates of exemption in respect of sanitary conveniences
were issued during the year.
Under s.38 of the Shops Act, 1950, we already had powers and duties
with regard to ventilation, temperature and sanitary conveniences in
shops. Under s.18 of the L.C.C. (General Powers) Act, 1958, additional
powers and duties under s.38 came to us on 1 January 1959, and these
were to do with lighting, with washing facilities and with facilities for
the taking of meals. Details were set out in the last annual report.
No exemption certificates were issued during the year.
Food Hygiene Regulations, 1960
Regulations 15 and 16 require the provision of a water supply and
wash hand basin on all food premises. No certificates of exemption were
issued during the year.
