information valuable from a scientific point of view would also
be obtained. Moreover, there would be nothing new in such a
course, since it is already done by some firms with respect to
other articles.
Although the ages of canned products is not the only factor
which may lead to the presence of excessive amounts of tin, I
do consider that, if the recommendation of Dr. Buchanan as to
the marking of canned goods was carried out and the marking
done in some simple way which could be easily interpreted,
it would be of considerable value to Public Health Authorities
in carrying out their duties. There may, of course, be technical
difficulties, but these should not be insuperable."
Representations were subsequently made to the Ministry of
Health by the Council, suggesting that consideration should be given
to the question of taking the necessary action in order to prohibit
tinned foods for sale being kept in stock beyond a safe period, and
a reply was received from the Ministry to the effect that they had
taken a note of such representations but that it seemed that there
would probably be considerable practical difficulties in giving effect
to the suggestion.
