Dental Treatment.
The Council's Scheme for Dental Treatment provides for
financial assistance to enable nursing and expectant mothers to
obtain artificial dentures, and for extractions and fillings required
by mothers and infants.
The work is carried out by the Dental Department of the
St. John's Hospital, Lewisham.
During the year dental treatment was provided for 102 mothers
and 23 infants, and complete or partial dentures to 45 mothers were
authorised by the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee-
Milk Assistance Scheme.
The Council's Scheme for the provision of dried milk for
infants and nursing and expectant mothers was continued during
the year. The Sub-Committee charged with the duty of considering
applications for assistance from necessitous persons, authorised 2,417
grants of dried milk for four weeks free of charge, and 510 grants
at the reduced price of 6d. per lb. Altogether, 15,013 lbs. of dried
milk were issued at a cost to the Council of £1,049.
Maternity Outfits.
There is an increasing demand for the sterilized maternity outfits
which are supplied to expectant mothers on the recommendation of
a doctor or midwife, and 359 outfits were supplied during the year,
compared with 314 in the previous year. No charge was made for
the outfit in 161 cases, 85 were issued at half-price, and 113 at cost
price.
Obstetric Consultants.
The services of the Consultants whose services are retained
by the Council were requisitioned by a medical practitioner in only
one case of difficult confinement.
Home Helps.
The services of a home help were provided in fourteen cases of
confinement. In a few instances the applicants were asked to make a
small contribution to the cost.
